Claudio Marchisio, fight against racism: “Insults are not all the same”

Twenty days ago, al Sports Festival of Trento, the former defender Liliam Thuram asked white footballers not to stay silent in case they witness episodes of racism. A few hours later, a bit as a provocation, Marco Materazzi he replied that when he got caught from the stands offensive chants, none of his colleagues had ever intervened. A comparison that has caused much discussion, especially in the light of the latest serious events in Serie A. «Confusing the two planes is a big mistakeHe reminds us Claudio Marchisio at the edge of a RED event, brand of the historic Re DePaolini hosiery of which it is testimonial. «It is one thing personal offense (even though it may be vulgar and obviously to be condemned), another is the background attack discriminatory».

In short, racism remains a serious problem in football.
«The incredible paradox is to see a supporter who lashes out at a black opponent with discriminatory insults. Then maybe he has a black striker who scores fifteen goals and becomes a darling. The spotlights of sport highlight these episodes, but racism is everywhere: in the streets of our cities, of Europe, of the United States, we cannot deny it ».

How is it possible to fight him (and defeat him)?
«The only way is to teach respect starting from the schools. On the other hand, children, when they are small, stay together and play without divisions of any kind. Sometimes, unfortunately, something happens as we grow up: we therefore need a transversal integration, involving all sectors. And maybe we adults should also look at the little ones every now and then ».

Apart from episodes of racism, how do you rate this Serie A?
«I see the Milanese and Atalanta as favorites because they have been more balanced for two years now. Then of course also Napoli is an excellent team that will fight until the end, without forgetting Juventus, Roma and Lazio. I think it will be a good championship, with great balance ».

Speaking of Juventus, how do you assess the not-so-brilliant moment?
«She started with half a foot, but she has the strength to soon find the right path and try to fight in the upper floors: the recent positive results have restored confidence to the group. And those players, with the history they have, can find that kind of path more easily. It could become a problem, however, if these same players find themselves fighting for lower positions, they are not used to it ».

Do you see his heirs on the Juventus midfield? The name of Manuel Locatelli is often mentioned.
“Honestly, I’ve never thought about it. Now that Juventus is going through a complicated period, it is normal to make comparisons with the past, but each player has his own identity. I too, as a boy, they flanked me to Marco Tardelli, but I didn’t aspire to become him: certainly not because he wasn’t a great champion, but because I wanted to become a midfielder with my characteristics. It must also be said that football, or rather the way of playing, evolves rapidly, so the players also change: from when I started to today there has been a good leap ».

From the Old Lady to the National Team: it was a magical summer for Italian sport, not just football. Is there a company that has particularly impressed you?
«To mention just one would be a lack of respect towards all the athletes in the world who, during the pandemic, went through difficult weeks since they could not train. However, a peculiarity of us Italians must be recognized: in times of difficulty, we bring out the best. We have it in our DNA and it is valid in all fields ».

Even if the best victory will be to break down the barriers of racism.
