Torrential rains that caused flooding in New York City on Friday (29) reflect a “new normal” due to the effects of climate change, Governor Kathy Hochul said on Saturday (30).
Nearly eight inches of rain fell in some parts of America’s most populous city, enough to allow a sea lion at the Central Park Zoo to briefly swim outside the confines of its pool.
Although the risk of flooding in the city had decreased as early as Saturday, a municipal hospital in the Brooklyn district said it would evacuate all patients and staff following a power failure.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull had switched to backup power after Friday’s blackout in the neighborhood, but repairs will require power to be turned off completely for several days, said officials at the hospital, which was moving its 120 patients to other locations.
The intense rain turned some streets into rivers, stranding buses and cars for hours, and forced the closure of some subway lines and urban trains. Flights were delayed or canceled, and a terminal at LaGuardia Airport had to be evacuated.
