Climate change protesters throw paint at La Scala theater in Milan

MILAN (Reuters) – Anti-climate activists in Italy threw paint at the entrance to the famous opera house La Scala in Milan on Wednesday ahead of the opening performance of the season, local police said.

Activists have staged protests across Europe in recent months, sometimes targeting museums and works of art, calling for tougher action to tackle global warming.

The Ultima Generazione (Last Generation) movement said in a statement that it was responsible for the Milan episode.

“Instead of taking the necessary measures to protect Italy’s future from drought and climate disasters, politics is closing down to enjoy a show for the few,” he said.

Twelve people died on the southern Italian island of Ischia last month in a landslide caused by torrential rain.

During the summer, the worst drought in 70 years hit the northern areas around the Po River, which accounts for about a third of the country’s agricultural production.

Police said they had detained five people after the incident at La Scala as officials quickly removed paint from the theater’s entrance.

One of the highlights of the Italian cultural calendar, La Scala will open its 2022-23 season this Wednesday with a performance of the Russian opera “Boris Godunov”.
