Sound warning for immediate adoption of reforms in view of the emerging water crisis broadcast today, Tuesday (5/10) his Meteorological Service UN, describing the management of global water resources as “fragmentary and inadequate”.
THE climate change is expected to increase the risks associated with water, such as droughts and the floods, and the number of people living with the agony of finding water is expected to increase rapidly due to the growing water shortage and the increase of the Earth’s population, the report adds, as transmitted by APE-MPE.
“We need to wake up and deal with the looming water crisis,” said Peteri Taalas, director general of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
5 billion people will not have adequate access to water by 2050
The report entitled “The Sate of Climate Services 2021: Water”, a collaboration between the WMO, international organizations and scientific institutions, estimates that the number of people who will not have adequate access to water will exceed 5 billion by 2050, compared to 3.6 billion in 2018.
With this report, the WMO is calling for more funding and immediate action to improve water management, as well as the establishment of better flood and drought warning systems in Asia.
Despite some recent progress, the report notes that 107 countries are far from achieving sustainable management of their water resources by 2030.
