Close to an agreement with one of the three mobile companies to operate as a mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), is reportedly the energy company Volton, which had announced earlier this year its intention to enter the market of telecommunications.
The National Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) is currently in the process of mediation at the request of Volton to reach an agreement with one of the three mobile companies (Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind) and according to information in the coming months there will be agreement.
The mediation process is based on what is provided by law. The energy group had previously negotiated with each provider separately, but without being able to conclude an agreement.
It is noted that the same procedure was followed in the past when Forthnet had started procedures to operate as MVNO. EETT was also asked to intervene there and finally there was an agreement with Vodafone, but finally Forthnet’s plans “froze” when the company entered a process of change of ownership and were finally abandoned when there was an agreement for the acquisition of Wind by the United Group.
What are MVNOs?
Virtual providers are companies that do not have their own infrastructure or spectrum licenses, but instead “rent” the radio from mobile providers, usually MVNO companies targeting specific audiences and markets by offering special packages and offers.
This model is very common in other countries, as it is estimated that there are more than 1,000 MVNOs worldwide. In Europe most virtual providers are located in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom.
Also, abroad, many companies with a large customer base in other sectors, from energy to aviation, have tried to offer telecommunications services with the MVNO model, utilizing their customer base.
Today in Greece there is no virtual provider. The last was Cyta Hellas, which was finally acquired in 2018 by Vodafone in a deal worth 118 million euros.
At the time of the acquisition, Cyta Hellas had about 300,000 fixed and internet subscribers and about 40,000 mobile customers as a virtual provider.
