At the Beyeler Foundation, in Basel, from this weekend until January 2 (compulsory green pass) a group exhibition is set up which – we bet? – would also like to Alexandra Ocasio Cortez. We have previewed it for Italy and we have already elected it a #mustsee Seasonal.
He cured it Theodora Vischer, minute as well as strong-willed art historian engaged for years to study documents and testimonies to bring to light the merits of artists that have been forgotten for too long.
And so, in the bright spaces of the Swiss foundation (designed by Renzo Piano: stop at least a few minutes in front of the pond with the water lilies …), the original works of nine artists for the project Close Up. Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Paula Modershon-Becker, Lotte Laserstein, Frida Kahlo, Alice, Neel, Marlene Dumas, Cindy Sherman, Elizabeth Peyton.
The idea is that of investigate how, from 1870 to the present day, some of the most representative artists have harnessed the power of the portrait and self-portrait to give us their vision of the world. Affirming – against everything and everyone – that another universe is possible, that subjectivity is by its nature plural and composite.
In a skewer of salt that changes from cream to purest white, we observe the pride of the Frenchwoman Berthe Morisot, the only impressionist able to obtain the acclaim of critics in Paris, and of the American Mary Cassatt, a pioneer in bringing dignity to domestic interiors. On Frida Kahlo what to say that hasn’t already been said? His self-portraits are peppered with symbols in which his painful personal history mixes with that of Mexico, his homeland.
With the twentieth century everything changes: the rittatti of Marlene dumas, surreal those of Cindy Sherman. In the opening gallery we better present their works and also those of the other artists on display, perhaps less known but no less seductive (our favorite is semi-unknown in Italy: it is called Paula Modersohn-Becker, don’t miss it).
It’s time to close up and look closely and unfiltered at women’s talent for art.
