It has been less than a month and a half since Poland began building a wall on its border with Belarus to ensure that migrants from Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq will not cross its territory. And suddenly, with the start of the war in Ukraine, all the borders were opened for Ukrainian refugees and Poland welcomes hundreds of thousands from neighboring Ukraine. The European Parliament in Strasbourg is discussing today the activation of the new Community directive on “temporary protection” which gives Ukrainians the right to temporary residence and work in all EU member states.
War shocks people in every corner of the continent
Kathryn Wallard, head of the ECRE European Refugee and Exile Council, which includes dozens of refugee aid organizations, is optimistic about managing refugee flows: “Europe is able to manage flows. The same was true of the 2015 refugee crisis. “Today, however, the reaction of the 27 is different. We hope it will last. Thanks to the joint efforts of the member states, the situation is manageable.”
Impressed by the speed with which decisions are being made, European Home Affairs Commissioner Elva Johansson said: “I am a proud European, proud of the solidarity shown by individual citizens, local authorities, border guards, aid organizations and governments.”
German Interior Minister Nancy Fezer has no answer to the crucial question of what works in 2022 that did not work in the 2015 refugee crisis. It only assumes that the war in Ukraine is happening right before our eyes, in the backyard of Europe. And this fact shocks people in every corner of the continent.
