CNA: The need to diversify meat exports is a lesson from the Chinese embargo

This Wednesday morning (15), the Ministry of Agriculture said it had been informed that China had lifted the embargo on Brazilian beef, which had already lasted for four months.

In an interview with CNN, the technical director of the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA), Bruno Lucchi, stated that the sector expected a faster resumption of trade, as no health problems were found in domestic products.

For him, one of the central causes of the embargo would be a commercial need in China itself, which was facing problems in the production of pork, which had a large number of slaughters due to problems.

“China is a country where the meat that has the greatest stimulus for consumption is pork. Holding back beef was something that could even improve prices for Chinese pig farmers. We believe that we can have a commercial fund, and this is normal for countries that have a relationship like Brazil and China, which is strong from the point of view of trade,” said Lucchi.

China is the biggest consumer of Brazilian beef, representing more than 50% of sector exports. The embargo caused apprehension and, according to the manager, can be used as a lesson to highlight the need to diversify the country’s exports.

“We have to diversify our export portfolio and our commercial partners. As much as China is a great partner, depending on more than 50% of its volume exported to a country is something that really can have risks,” he said, clarifying that the sector considers it important to maintain existing relations, but also to expand them .

Lucchi highlighted that this growth in the variety of buyers is one of the priorities of the Agriculture portfolio for next year, as indicated by recent trips by Minister Tereza Cristina, who was in Russia in November.

The resumption of exports should not be felt immediately. There is a product, shipping and marketing certification process that must be followed. “It will be a gradual recovery”, he explained.

According to the director, the price of beef should neither increase nor significantly decrease at the end of the year, even with the return of exports to China.
