CNJ suspends rule that prohibited the use of cropped tops and shorts in the STJ

The national inspector of Justice, Luís Felipe Salomão, suspended last Friday (12) a rule that regulated the use of clothing to enter the premises of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), in Brasília. The device was approved in February this year and sparked debate among social media users.

According to the normative instruction that was suspended, people were prohibited from accessing the court premises wearing shorts, shorts, sleeveless blouses, swimwear and gym clothes (leggings) and cropped blouses (which expose the belly).

The attire that was permitted was a suit, dress shirt and tie for people who identify as male and a dress, blouse with pants or skirt “of a social nature” for those who identify as female.

Constraints

In the decision, the inspector understood that the restrictions could cause embarrassment to the female public.

“There is a possible non-compliance with such regulations and guidelines in their effects, since, I grant [usual, corriqueiro, sabido de todos] is that specifications referring to skimpy clothes and other attire such as, for example, sleeveless blouses or skimpy outfits – are used as a means of approach and possible embarrassment linked to the female gender”, decided Salomão.
