In the Amazon region, the preservation of traditional culture and territories is essential for the future of the forest. Young people are using social networks to mobilize communities and promote environmental conservation.
The ‘Voices of Tapajós’ project emerges as a coalition that strengthens the protagonism of traditional communities. “A coalition that strengthens this protagonism of the voices of the communities. We also thought it would be a means to bring our narratives, especially young people – since our focus to youth,” explains one of the participants.
From radio waves to social networks
‘Voices of Tapajós’ has its roots in the work of NGO Health and Joy, founded in 1987. Initially, the organization used a hospital boat to bring medical attention to isolated communities, while promoting cultural exchange and education on topics such as territorial planning, citizenship and renewable energy.
From this initiative, the Mocoronga Communication Network was born, which was part of 16 communities in the region. Today, the reach of the project has expanded – reaching over 30 communities – thanks to the strategic use of social networks.
Valter Kumaruara, one of the young people who started in the ‘Health and Joy’ project and today coordinates the ‘Vozes Tapajós’ coalition, highlights the power of communication: “I see communication as a defense tool for us. Sometimes we have only the phone for it”.

The global scenario of climate change, young people from Tapajós voices have larger ambitions. They aim to sensitize decision makers at the next United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30).
“This theme of the environment of climate change impacts our lives, the Amazon is in evidence, so we have to go to see how this is, how this is done, these negotiations, how our future is being treated there, right?”, Says Fábio Pena do ‘Project Health and Joy’. For the Education and Communication Coordinator it is important to have Amazonian voices present in these crucial discussions for the future of the region and the planet.
