CNN Debate: Biden intends to treat the invasion of the Capitol as a “seismic” moment

US President Joe Biden has long said that democracy will be on the ballot in 2024.

On the stage of the debate promoted by CNN in Atlanta this Thursday, he plans to frame this issue in the harshest terms yet, sources familiar with the matter say.

Biden is expected to describe the Jan. 6 insurrection as a “seismic” and era-defining moment that should be a watershed moment for American voters.

Just as November 2004 represented the first presidential election after September 11, 2001, and November 2008 was the height of the global financial crisis, sources say, November 2024 is also expected to represent an inflection point for the Trump era.

“The personification of the threat is returning,” one of Biden’s sources said of the prospect of Trump being reelected.

The Biden campaign believes that the Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol — along with the Supreme Court’s anti-abortion decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade – are the two most critical forces that have changed the rights and norms of US voters and are expected to drive them to the polls in November.

A CNN reported that Biden and his campaign plan to lean heavily on Trump’s own words to attack him, hoping to raise awareness about Trump’s past comments and policies.

And Biden’s team is also targeting Trump’s transition playbook. Before the debate, the Biden-Harris campaign launched a new website to criticize “Project 2025” plans compiled by the Heritage Foundation as destroying democratic checks and balances.
