CNN Debate: Deputies comment on Lula’s speech about the Marielle Franco case

In a debate held by CNN This Monday (6), the federal deputies Filipe Barros (PL – PR) and Ivan Valente (PSOL – SP) commented on the statement by the former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (EN) that “people” of a ruler “are not ashamed to have killed the Marielle [Franco] ”.

The president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was involved in the case after the doorman of his condominium Vivendas da Barra stated that the Chief Executive authorized the entry of former PM Élcio Queiroz into the place. Queiroz is suspected of having driven the car from which the shots that killed the councilor came from. Marielle and her driver Anderson Gomes were murdered on March 14, 2018.

Although the PT did not mention Bolsonaro’s name, the defense of the chief executive will sue Lula for the possible reference.

For Filipe Barros, Lula’s speech is an attempt by the pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic to “call attention”. According to the deputy, the PT is in first place in the electoral polls, but he is not able to mobilize voters on the streets. Therefore, he seeks to polarize the election by bringing the Marielle case to the agenda. “Who uses politically [do caso Marielle]is the left”, he says.

The PL parliamentarian also assesses that Bolsonaro’s defense is correct in prosecuting the former president for speech. In his opinion, the minister Alexandre de Moraes of Federal Court of Justice (STF), should include Lula in the fake news inquiry for the statement.

Barros also claims that, in addition to the investigation into the councilwoman’s death, he wants to know who hired Adélio Bispo to assassinate Bolsonaro during the 2018 election campaign.

Ivan Valente, in turn, believes that the president will achieve nothing by prosecuting Lula, since at no time was Bolsonaro’s name mentioned directly.

The parliamentarian assesses that the opening of a process is an attempt by Bolsonaro to escape from what “really matters”. “He has to outsource blame with governors, mayors, with the STF, TSE and, evidently, wants to take the focus off the issues. It’s obvious he’s going to want an accusation that hasn’t been,” he considers.

“What I can say, and Lula is right, is that Bolsonaro’s connections with militia members are explicit. He hires militiamen to work in his office, such as Fabrício Queiroz and Adriano da Nóbrega ”, points out the PSOL deputy.
