CNN Nosso Mundo airs special program on Queen Elizabeth this Friday

O CNN Our World makes a special edition to talk about the history and legacy of the longest-lived monarch in British history – who died this Thursday (8).

Elizabeth II spent seven decades on the British throne, being the first to celebrate the platinum jubilee. She became queen at age 25, with the death of her father, George VI.

At the time, the UK was still recovering from the ravages of World War II. The queen was an active witness to history and learned to develop an important diplomatic relationship with presidents, popes and prime ministers.

“In the world, there were more Elizabethans than royalists. Countries that traditionally belonged to the British monarchy were faithful to Elizabeth. Will they be faithful to their son?”, analyzes historian Leandro Karnal.

Traveling around the world, to strengthen strategic relationships, even gained a name: “soft power”, the British way of influencing governments, without the use of force. Elizabeth managed to keep the British crown as one of the main symbols of the United Kingdom in the world. An institution with over a thousand years of history. After all, what will the monarchy be like from now on?

“We never know what happens when someone sits in the seat of power. Even power and even marriage, there is a character. After power and marriage, there is another. Some people get better, other people get worse”, evaluates the historian.

The special episode with Leandro Karnal will air on this Friday (9) at 11:30 pm .
