new search of CNN shows that 75% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters in the United States want the party to nominate someone other than President Joe Biden for the 2024 election, a sharp increase from earlier this year.
The poll comes as Biden’s approval ratings remain low and most Americans are unhappy with the state of the country and the economy. Inflation remains high and a new report released on Tuesday (26) shows that consumer confidence has fallen for the third consecutive month.
Twenty-four percent of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters said they want another candidate because they think Biden would not win in 2024, up from 18% in a poll conducted in January and February.
Thirty-two percent feel that way because they don’t want Biden to be re-elected, up from 16% earlier this year. Twenty-five percent said they prefer the current president as a candidate in the next election, down from 45% in the last poll.
The new poll shows that 31% of Democratic and Democratic-leaning voters aged 45 and over prefer Biden as the 2024 candidate. Among those under 45, only 18% prefer Biden as the 2024 candidate.
The survey also showed that a majority of Republican and Republican-leaning voters say they don’t want former President Donald Trump to be their party’s candidate in the 2024 presidential election. Fifty-five percent would prefer someone else to be the candidate. which represents an increase of 49% compared to the last survey.
The Biden administration is struggling to control inflation, the highest in 40 years, with millions of Americans facing high prices for essentials like food, housing and gas.
The rise in prices comes after the Covid-19 pandemic, which disrupted major global supply chains, and Russia’s war on Ukraine, which further affected oil and food prices.
Biden’s approval rating remains in the 30% range, according to a separate poll by CNN released earlier this month, and Democrats are bracing for losses in this year’s midterm elections.
The search of CNN was released the same day as a new poll by the University of New Hampshire, which shows that just 31% of state Democrats want Biden to run for reelection and 59% don’t want him to run again. In June, this last figure was 54%.
This research of CNN was conducted July 22-24 by SSRS online, using a sample drawn from a probability-based panel. Results among the complete national random sample of 1,002 adults have a margin of error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points. For the subset of 362 Democratic and Democratic-leaning registered voters, the margin of error is 6.7 points.
