An ATR 72-500 aircraft belonging to the airline Voepass, formerly Passaredo, crashed on Friday afternoon (9) in Vinhedo, in the interior of São Paulo, near the border with Campinas. The aircraft was carrying 57 passengers and four crew members.
The accident occurred at 1:22 p.m., when the plane, which had taken off from Cascavel, Paraná, at 11:58 a.m., was preparing to land at Guarulhos Airport. The crash occurred inside the Recanto Florido condominium, an area of farms and ranches.
Residents of the region reported to the reporter of CNN Brazil Guilherme Rajão said he heard a loud bang at the time of the fall. Commander Castro, of the Military Police, reported that ambulances were sent to the scene to assist any possible injuries, including people who may have been hurt during rescue attempts.
Mobilization of authorities
The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), canceled his schedule and is on his way to Vinhedo to closely monitor the rescue and investigation work. The Military Police requested that hospitals in the region make medical equipment available to assist in the care of the victims.
Authorities have not yet released information about the condition of the victims or the causes of the accident. It is expected that the aircraft’s black box will be recovered in the next few hours, which will help clarify the circumstances of the crash.
This is considered the most serious air accident involving a commercial flight in Brazil in the last 17 years. The mood at the site is one of dismay and sadness, while rescue teams work tirelessly.
Investigations into the causes of the accident are expected to begin soon, with the participation of agencies such as the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (CENIPA). The public is awaiting more information about what happened and the identification of the victims.
