The mostly republican public who stopped to hear the speech of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, on Tuesday (4) received him with moderate positivity, according to a survey by the CNN conducted by SSRS.
People who watched the speech widely stated that Trump’s policies would take the country in the right direction, most of them saying the same in five areas of issues that were the focus of the president’s speech. But few expressed strong confidence in Trump to help people like them, use their presidential power responsibly or provide the nation a real leadership.
Approximately 7 out of 10 consulted said they had at least one somewhat positive reaction to Trump’s speech the night before, with 44% offering a very positive response. This is lower than the 57% of spectators who ranked Trump’s initial speech to Congress very positively eight years ago, or the 51% who said the same of former President Joe Biden’s initial speech in 2021. It is also below the “very positive” 48% classification that Trump saw for his 2018 Union State Pronouncement.
Good notes of speech observer are typical of presidential discourses in Congress, which tend to attract generally friendly audiences that disproportionately come from the presidents’ own parties. In reaction research to speeches from CNN which have been conducted most of the years since the clinton era, public reactions have always been positive.
The group of people who watched Trump speak on Tuesday was about 14 more republican percentage points than the general public.
Trump’s friendly audience has negatively reacted to a protest effort by a Democratic member of Congress. Eight out of 10 Americans who watched the speech said they saw Trump’s discourse interruption by Deputy Al Green as inappropriate, with only 20% saying that the Texas representative acted appropriately. Green was expelled from the House after continuing to protest even after a mayor’s warning, Mike Johnson.
