Russian delegations have visited an airport in central Iran at least twice recently to examine drones with combat capabilities, according to US national security adviser Jake Sullivan and satellite images obtained by CNN.
According to U.S. officials who spoke to the network, Iran began showing the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, “Shahed-191” and “Shahed-129” to Russia at the Kasan airport south of Tehran in June.
Both models have the ability to carry precision missiles.
“We have information that the Iranian government is preparing to supply Russia with several hundred UAVs, including with combat capabilities,” Sullivan told CNN.
“We appreciate that an official Russian delegation recently saw a demonstration of Iranian UAVs with attack capabilities,” he added, referring to images taken in June of Iranian drones seen by the Russian government delegation.
Sullivan also said that as far as the US is aware, the June visit “was the first time a Russian delegation visited this airport for such a presentation.”
According to officials cited by CNN, a Russian delegation visited the airport for a similar presentation again on July 5.
