This year, Coachella will have headliners Lana Del Rey , Doja Cat It is Tyler, The Creator . Completing the festival's line up are names such as Ludmilla , Featherweight , Bizarre , Sabrina Carpenter , Tyla , Tinashe , Chloe , Jon Batista , J Balbin It is Victoria Monét .
Big names in world music have passed through the Empire Polo Club, the venue that hosts the event annually, from K-pop to rock.
Remember five of the most iconic shows in Coachella history:
Beyoncé (2018)
In 2018, in addition to Eminem and The Weeknd, the Coachella lineup had Beyoncé as the headliner, the first black woman to hold the position in the festival's history. Since then, no other has repeated the feat, which will only be matched by Doja Cat in this year's edition.
Marking her return to the industry after giving birth to twins Rumi and Sir, the American singer used the performances to produce “Homecoming”, a project that includes a documentary about behind the scenes and the shows, as well as a live CD. The film is available on Netflix.
“After Beyoncé performed, after she did her dance, Coachella needs to change the name of Coachella to Beychella,” says a voice during the song “Top Off.”
Prince (2008)
According to reported Reutersa fee of US$5 million would have made Prince, at 49, agree to perform at Coachella in 2008.
He was announced as an additional attraction, as he only confirmed to the festival's production team that he would be in the lineup two weeks before the show, according to says the LA Times. Prince joined Roger Waters, Portishead and Jack Johnson on the event's list of attractions.
There, the voice of “Purple Rain” sold out tickets for Saturday and presented a show that was highlighted by the cover and “Creep”, by Radiohead.
Publicly disaffected by streaming services and online music consumption, Prince banned the performance from being on the networks for years. This was only reversed because Thom Yorke, composer and holder of the song's rights, released the publication, making this one of Prince's few records on the internet.
Lady Gaga (2017)
A year earlier, it was Lady Gaga who took the stage at the Empire Polo Club. She was hastily added to the edition's lineup precisely due to Beyoncé's pregnancy, which had to cancel her presence at the 2017 edition of the festival.
Lady Gaga's Coachella was marked by a rock n' roll vibe already brought to her Super Bowl performance that year. The show preceded the “Joanne World Tour”, which had its development and creation postponed due to the festival.
In addition to singing songs that marked her career, the New York singer also performed “The Cure”, a promotional song that talked about the singer's relationship with her fans and fibromyalgia.
Kanye West (2011)
Kanye West had just gone through the 2009 VMA controversy, when he interrupted Taylor Swift, when he decided to go into exile in Hawaii and record “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”.
The album, released in 2010, had songs like “Power” and “Monster” and was promoted at some of the main festivals at the time: SXSW, Lollapalooza and Coachella.
The rapper's time in Indio was rated by The Hollywood Reporter at the time as one of the greatest hip-hop sets in history.
Jay-Z (2010)
Jay-Z also turned his Coachella performance into an album and DVD. Acclaimed, the rapper presented a show based on the success of the album “The Blueprint 3”, the third to last released by him.
Jay-Z arrived at the festival a few months after winning three awards at the 2010 Grammy Awards. His performance was highlighted by the duet with Beyoncé, his wife. The two sang “Young Forever”, a song by the rapper made in partnership with Mr. Hudson that uses a sample from the German band “Forever Young”, from Alphaville.
