Coca-Cola will turn one of its most popular soft drinks into an alcoholic beverage

Coca-Cola is entering the canned cocktail fashion with an alcoholic version of Fresca soda.

In partnership with the brewery Corona Constellation Brands, the companies are going to launch, this year, the Fresca Mixed, a cocktail based on brandy.

Fresca is the second non-alcoholic beverage owned by Coke to be turned into an alcoholic version. In 2020, it successfully launched the seltzer Topo Chico.

Images and nutritional information for Fresca Mixed have not yet been released.

Constellation and Coca said they are launching the product because Fresca is “going through an increase in popularity.”

Calorie-free and sugar-free, the 64-year-old drink is an ideal choice for blending. While not yet revealing which flavors will be released, the companies said the new cocktail will be “inspired by recipes created by Fresca fans around the world.”

One notable fan is presenter Andy Cohen, who often drinks a “Frequila” on his show “Bravo”, which mixes tequila and Fresca.

Canned cocktail sales have exploded as consumers seek convenience and new flavors beyond wine and beer.

The beverage category grew 53% last year and is expected to grow another 29% over the next three years, according to data from IWSR Drinks Analysis.

Constellation’s research says alternative beverages for adults, which include ready-to-drink cocktails, represent an $8 billion market and will continue to grow.

Fashion is overshadowing seltzers. After strong sales in recent years, the low-calorie drink has lost popularity as customers grew tired of it.

Coke’s rival PepsiCo last year announced its entry into alcoholic beverages with “HARD MTN DEW,” a sugar-free canned beverage with 5% alcohol by volume, being created with the Boston Beer Company.
