Cocaine seized in alleged shipment of baby wipes in US

A shipment of baby wipes at the US-Mexico border was actually something very different: a shipment of cocaine valued at more than R$55 million at street prices.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents seized the drug last Friday at the Solidaridad-Colombia International Bridge, according to a press release released on Monday. (29). The bridge links Texas with the state of Novo Laredo, Mexico, over the Rio Grande, north of Laredo, Texas.

Members of the CBP Field Operations Office ordered a second inspection of a tow truck, which it claimed was carrying only baby wipes. Following a later, “non-intrusive” canine inspection, 1,935 packages containing nearly 700 kilograms of alleged cocaine were discovered, according to official information.

“This seizure is an excellent example of border security management and how it helps prevent dangerous narcotics from reaching our communities,” Alberto Flores, director of Laredo’s port of entry, said in a statement.

The agents seized the narcotics. The U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Homeland Security Investigations team are seeking more details of the seizure, according to the statement.
