The darling of Brazilians’ morning meal was the item with the highest increase recorded last year.
Ground coffee closed the year 2021 with a 50.24% increase in the Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA), released this Tuesday by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Specialists point out that the high is motivated by the long periods of drought last year.
Inflation leader in the food sector, coffee is followed by its most traditional complement at the table: refined sugar. The product showed an increase of 47.83% on supermarket shelves throughout 2021. Director of FGV Social, economist Marcelo Neri highlighted other data from the scenario that contributed to the rise in prices.
“The increase in the dollar impacted the price of products traded on the international market, despite Brazil being the largest exporter of coffee, it did not shy away from the highs. The 2021 drought also affected agricultural production, in general, but mainly that of coffee”, explains the expert.
The average price per kilo of coffee powder and beans in supermarkets reached R$ 49.06 in Manaus. It is the highest value detected in the eight capitals surveyed by the Consumer Basket survey (Horus/FGV), in December. In Belo Horizonte, the lowest value was found: R$ 29.62.
The National Coffee Council issued a note that the coffee harvest for 2022 still presents some uncertainties regarding size, since production depends on climatic factors. In 2021, the drought period influenced the production of the lowest national historical harvest. Even so, the agency guarantees that there is sufficient stock for the domestic market and for export.
The Brazilian Coffee Industry Association (Abic) reinforces that from March, with the end of the rainy season, it will be possible to have a forecast of the next coffee harvest. In a note to CNN, Celírio Inácio, executive director of the entity, informed that efforts are being made to normalize production.
