Coinbase cryptocurrency exchange has acquired a Deribit cryptocurrency derivatives. The amount of the transaction amounted to $ 2.9 billion.
Coinbase will pay $ 700 million to owners, and will pay the remaining amount by shares of class A.
Coinbase bought Deribit
Coinbase first began negotiations with Deribit in late March. The deal demanded long discussions. In January, the derivatives exchange considered the offer from Kraken. The trading platform offered $ 4-5 billion, but the Deribit management refused.
Four months later, Deribit agreed significantly below – $ 2.9 billion from Coinbase. The exact reasons for such a decision are unknown. Perhaps this was influenced by the departure of Deribit from Russia due to Western sanctions, which reduced its assessment.
Coinbase has been offering cryptocurrency futures for four years. Recently, the American crypto -rope began to offer CFTC adjustable CFTCs on XRP. The transaction with Deribit will enhance the impact of the platform in this segment.
Coinbase shares (Coin) on the stock market increased by 36%+ from April against the backdrop of the expectations of the transaction with Deribit and the total growth of cryptorrhist. Earlier, the crypto -rope also published a financial report for the first quarter of 2025. Pure revenue of the trading platform decreased by 10% compared to the previous quarter – to $ 2 billion. However, the income from subscription and services increased by 8.9% to $ 698.1 million.
Deribit managers will receive most of their requested amounts of $ 2.9 billion in the form of shares of class A. about $ 700 million crypto -tank will pay in cash. It is expected that the transaction will be closed by the end of 2025.
Coinbase has not yet told exactly how to use Deribit resources to expand derivatives in the market. However, one thing is clear: Deribit is a world leader in cryptoderivists. Integration will give Coinbase a huge user base and liquidity. This will be a serious blow to competitors like Binance, Bybit, Kraken, who are fighting for dominance in the cryptocurrency derivatives segment.
