Coinbase, a major cryptocurrency exchange, announced that hackers had hacked into its customers’ accounts and stolen cryptocurrency from 6,000 users. The exchange does not name the amount withdrawn by the hackers.
For the hack, a vulnerability was used to bypass the multifactor authentication function via SMS.

Interestingly, this is not a short-term hacker attack. Hackers operated on Coinbase from March to May of this year. The exchange claims that in order to hack, the attacker needed to know not only the user’s email, but also the passwords and phone numbers associated with the account on the exchange. And you also needed to have access to email.
The exchange itself believes that hackers gained access to all the necessary information thanks to phishing software.
Of course, the exchange has already eliminated the vulnerability. At the same time, Coinbase promises to return the cryptocurrency stolen from them to the victims, though, apparently, in monetary terms.
We will credit your account with funds equal to the value of the currency incorrectly removed from your account during the incident. Some clients have already been reimbursed for expenses. We will make sure all affected customers receive the full value of what you lost. You should see this in your account no later than today
Coinbase is the second largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world. It has approximately 68 million clients.
