CoinMarketCap admits email leaks of over 3 million users

A popular information resource about the cryptocurrency market was never able to determine how hackers got access to the data and to close the vulnerability.

According to the site
Have I Been Pwned, October 12
happened leaked about 3,117,548 email addresses of CoinMarketCap users. The site administration did not notice the leaked user data until the e-mail addresses were discovered for sale on several popular forums for hackers.

CoinMarketCap confirmed the data breach and clarified that users’ passwords to email addresses were not compromised during the hack.

“CoinMarketCap has learned that data packets have appeared on the Internet, allegedly representing a list of user accounts. The data we have seen is only e-mail addresses without passwords. ”

The fact that hackers did not get their email passwords is somewhat encouraging. In addition, the absence of passwords could indicate that the attack on CoinMarketCap was most likely not related to a serious vulnerability or an attack by professional hackers.

However, the data breach has compromised user privacy. Hackers can launch a wave of cyberattacks on site users, including sending out phishing emails. CoinMarketCap specialists were unable to determine where the hack took place in the system, but it is likely that the data was not leaked from the site’s servers.

“We have not found any evidence of data leakage from our servers and are actively investigating this issue. We will inform our users of new facts about the investigation as soon as we have such information. ”

Recently, hackers put up for sale information on more than 500,000 users of the Turkish cryptocurrency exchange BtcTurk. The platform has confirmed the data breach, but assures that customers’ assets are safe. Earlier, the Hotbit exchange stopped activities for maintenance after a cyber attack and reported a possible data breach of 2 million users. And in April, the Celsius Network cryptocurrency platform revealed a leak of personal data of its users through an outsourcing company. Some users received emails with links to phishing sites.
