Cold should be more intense in the South region than a cold front in May, says meteorologist

A new cold front should bring temperatures down in the southern part of the country from this Friday (10). In the southeast, the cold began to intensify on Thursday, and should continue to decline in the coming days.

In an interview with CNN , Climatempo team meteorologist Maria Clara Sassaki explained the forecasts for the weekend. In the southern region, the cold should be even more intense than the cold front that started on May 18, when frosts occurred in parts of the states. This is because there are fewer clouds in the sky at this time, which provides a sharper drop in temperatures.

“The states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul faced the first cold wave with lots of clouds in the sky, so temperatures did not drop as much as they should now. This cold air mass is similar in intensity, and will not be cloudy while it is operating. Therefore, the feeling of cold is greater”, described Sassaki.

“Clouds serve as a kind of blanket. If we have clouds, the temperature doesn’t drop that much. If you have a clearer sky, a clearer night, then the temperature drops, and we wake up with frost and fog”.

The cold trend should continue during the winter, which starts on June 21, with fluctuations in temperature. “Winter will be very similar to last year: we had very intense cold waves”, said the expert. “We have the same phenomena acting as we had last year, so the cold waves that hit the central region of Brazil must be as intense as the ones we had last year”.

Some regions of the country can experience a period of 10 to 15 days without rain during winter.

The lack of humidity can put states like Goiás, Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais in a state of alert regarding the increase in fires.

Rains in the Northeast

The intense rain that has been punishing the northeast region of the country is expected to continue, according to Sassaki, and the risk of landslides on slopes remains high. She explained that the wet wind circulation known as East Waves is normal during this time of year, but the amount of rain was higher than usual.

“Now that the rain is returning to normal, the soil is already fragile. “It is already a soil that has been heavily attacked, it is very soaked. So any rain that happens now in the next few months is rain with the potential to cause new landslides on slopes — mainly in Pernambuco, Alagoas and Paraíba, which were the most affected states, and which can still receive moderate to heavy rains now. in the next days.”

Traditionally, the rain remains in the region in the winter months, and should continue until the end of July.
