The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a cold wave warning for the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina this Friday (28). The notice is expected to end next Tuesday (2).
The regions of southwestern Rio Grande do Sul, western Santa Catarina, Greater Florianópolis, the Metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, and the southern portion of Santa Catarina may be some of the affected areas.
According to Inmet, the next few days should see low temperatures and heavy frosts for the entire southern region of Brazil. This is because a cold front accompanied by a strong and large air mass of polar origin, with cold and dry air, will pass through the region between this Friday (28) and Saturday (29).
Furthermore, with the change in direction and the intensification of winds, a low thermal sensation could accentuate the cold throughout the southern portion. During the passage of the cold front, the formation of areas of instability can cause rain in the northern half of Rio Grande do Sul, as well as Santa Catarina and Paraná.
The north of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina may also be affected by humidity during the passage of the cold front, as the forecast indicates. In the eastern strip of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, winds acting from west to south may accentuate the cold and should contribute to the damming of the Guaíba until next Sunday (30).
Low temperatures
Thermometers are expected to register between 0°C and 5°C in the early hours of the morning, starting this Saturday (29) and persisting at least until next Monday (1st), according to Inmet. In areas of Campanha, the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and southern Paraná, the temperature may be negative and vary between 0°C and -5°C.
Regarding frost, this phenomenon may begin between the evening and early morning of Sunday (30) and Monday (1st). Frosts should be widespread and with intensities ranging from moderate to very strong.
