The collapse of the roof of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in the north of Recife, was caused by the oxidation of metal parts that fixed one of the structural support trusses. This is the conclusion of the expert report prepared by the Institute of Criminalistics (IC) and delivered to the Civil Police last Monday (25). The document cites problems of infiltration and inadequate maintenance.
THE CNN had access to the confidential document, signed by expert Fernando Luiz da Silva, this Tuesday (3). The accident occurred on September 30th.
According to the report, oxidation compromised the console – support piece for fixing – of the fifth truss of the sanctuary, resulting in the loss of adhesion to the wall. Without adequate fixation, the structure could not support the weight of the roof, which was made worse by additional equipment, such as solar panels and asphalt blankets installed to contain infiltration.
Infiltration problems and inadequate maintenance
The document details that water infiltration into the ceiling and walls, especially the right wall of the sanctuary, was mainly responsible for the wear of the metal parts.
The expert highlighted that the asphalt blankets applied did not fulfill their function, allowing infiltrations to continue. The report also emphasizes the absence of a maintenance plan that could have prevented the collapse.
“The characteristics observed in the previously mentioned metal parts resulted from water infiltration in the ceiling and walls, plus the one on the right, with an asphalt blanket being placed there, the evidence of which allows us to say that the blankets did not fulfill their role with the desired efficiency. to protect that roof from infiltrations”, points out the report.
The report also points out that the anchor bolts (screws) of the fifth truss exhibited a higher concentration of oxidation, although there was no complete rupture of the parts. “These components gradually lost their ability to adhere to the location where they were fixed”, explains the document.
Collapse
The collapse occurred during the distribution of food baskets, leaving two dead and 29 injured, on September 30, in the north of Recife. Since the day of the accident, the Criminalistics Institute has sent experts to the site several times to collect information and understand the causes of the structure’s collapse.
Completed on November 25, the report was delivered to the Civil Police, who confirmed receipt and stated that investigations are still ongoing to determine those responsible for the lack of adequate maintenance of the sanctuary.
“The Civil Police of Pernambuco informs that the Vasco da Gama Police Station received the expert report from the Institute of Criminalistics regarding the collapse of the ceiling in the Sanctuary, in Morro da Conceição. The document will be analyzed and incorporated into the ongoing investigative process, with additional steps being taken to fully elucidate what happened. The IC emphasizes that it was necessary to extend the deadline initially informed by the expert due to the complexity of the case, which includes the analysis of various documentation and construction aspects that do not have a project, as well as the IC teams returning to the site several times for inspections. in loco”, informs, in a note, the Civil Police of Pernambuco.
Wanted by CNN the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Conceição has not yet commented on the results of the examination.
