The New York digital art fan has lost 15 NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club collections, as well as one NFT CloneX, for a total of $ 2.2 million.
Artistic curator of the Ross + Kramer gallery in New York, collecting unique tokens,
wrote on Twitter that he was a phishing victim. Hackers stole 16 non-fungible tokens from him from three different collections: eight NFTs from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, seven NFTs from the Mutant Ape Yacht Club, and one NFT CloneX. The value of the stolen cryptoassets is estimated at about $ 2.2 million.
The user clicked on a link leading to a “phishing contract” disguised as a genuine NFT application, thereby allowing this contract to spend tokens on their behalf. The attacker has already managed to sell several appropriated tokens on the OpenSea site. For example, NFT CloneX was sold for 17 ETH. The rest of the tokens were frozen by the platform at the request of Kramer. He stated that he learned an important lesson and advised other collectors to use a hardware wallet to protect their tokens from theft.
Last week, a phishing attack affected NFT Monkey Kingdom buyers, who lost 7,000 SOL worth $ 1.3 million. According to PhishLabs, in the first half of 2021, the total volume of phishing attacks across all industries grew by 22%. Earlier, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also warned the public about an increase in the number of phishing attacks to steal cryptocurrencies.
Given the rise in popularity of NFT this year, attackers are exploiting this for their own purposes, so owners of collectible tokens and any other cryptocurrency should remain vigilant to avoid costly mistakes.
