Colombia: A major military operation is expected against rebels in the border areas

THE Colombia announced that it will hold a large military business aimed at eliminating rebels in the border areas.

In particular, the first left-wing president in the history of Colombia, Mr Gustavo Petro, who took power last August, recently started peace talks with ELN (Army of National Liberation) rebels, following negotiations in Venezuela, while also seeking to implement the 2016 peace deal with FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces) breakaway rebels Forces of Colombia). President Petros aspires to end the conflict with two factions of dissidents who reject the peace deal.

At the same time, Petros’ plan provides for reduced sentences for drug dealers and gang members involved in the production and trafficking of cocaine. The condition is that they surrender to the authorities, reveal details of the routes followed by the cartels and hand over the assets they have acquired.

“We are in contact with neighboring countries because we have observed border activities that we are going to fight with our (armed) forces, but also thanks to the cooperation with Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela and Panama,” the minister said Interior Alfonso Prada to journalists.

Six units, consisting of 400 soldiers each, will be deployed on the country’s southern border, the Colombian minister said. Clashes that broke out a few days ago in the area, between former members of the FARC to control drug trafficking, claimed the lives of at least 18 people.

According to Colombian government officials, large coca farms and cocaine manufacturing laboratories have been identified along the Colombian border. They also reported that armed groups with ties to Mexican cartels, which are involved in drug trafficking, operate in these areas.
