Colombia: Arrests in the context of the Kukuta bombing

Colombian police announced Tuesday that members had arrested five people during raids in Medellin, the country’s second largest city, and nearby areas, as part of a search for the bombing earlier this month at the city’s airport. Cucuta, in the northern part of Colombia.

Three people, including two police firefighters, were killed Dec. 14 when two bombs exploded at an airport in the city of Norde de Santander.

This province, which borders Venezuela, has become the new epicenter of the endless civil armed conflict in Colombia. Security forces are battling rebel groups and drug gangs in the province, as coca leaf production, the basis of cocaine production, is on the rise.

In June, a helicopter carrying Colombian President Ivan Duque (right) was hit by bullets at the same airport. Earlier that month, a bomb blast at a military base in Norte de Santander injured 44 people, including two U.S. military advisers in the Andean country.

Three men and two women were arrested in the raids in Medellin, according to a police press release. They were flown to Koukuta early yesterday morning and charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated murder.

The investigation is ongoing, police added.
