At least 12 people were killed when bus was buried under the mud due to landslide in the northwest Colombia yesterday (local time), according to authorities and first responders.
The landslide, triggered by heavy rains, hit the vehicle between the villages of Pueblo Rico and Santa Cecilia in Risaralda province, about 230 kilometers from the capital Bogota.
“Unfortunately, the result is that 12 people were killed in this tragedyVictor Manuel Tamayo, governor of Risaralda, told a journalist today.
Five people were rescued alive and rescue crews are still searching for othershe added.
“All the work is done to recover them bodies still on the bus”said Tamayo.
Officials stated that at least 25 people were on the buswhich ran from Cali, the third largest city in Colombia, to Contoto, in the province of Choco.
Colombia, as noted by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, has been affected by a period unusually heavy rainfall, attributed to the La Nina phenomenon.

Since the beginning of 2022, incidents related to heavy rainfall have claimed the lives of over 216 people while 538,000 people have been left homeless, according to government statistics. Another 48 people are still missing across the country, according to these figures.
