More than 13,000 people in Colombia have been forced to flee their homes this year due to violent clashes between armed groups and government forces, according to a United Nations Security Council report accessed by Agence France-Presse yesterday.
“The situation in the Pacific region is particularly worrying,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement. “Thousands of civilians are trapped in the crossfire between illegal armed perpetrators and law enforcement.”
According to the report, 13,422 people, of whom 5,574 were minors, were displaced due to violence in the country in 2021.
Colombia is experiencing the worst clashes between armed groups since the signing in 2016 of a peace agreement between Bogota and FARC rebels.
According to experts, the state has not regained control of territories previously controlled by Marxist rebels, which has facilitated the establishment of new armed organizations. FARC insurgents, ELN guerrillas and organized crime gangs formed by former paramilitaries are fighting to control drug trafficking and illegal mining.
