THE Gulf Clan is the strongest drug trafficking gang in Colombia, the largest exporter cocaine in the world.
The arrest of Otoniel is the biggest blow the Colombian government has dealt to organized crime in the country. Otoniel was also advertised by the United States, who offered a reward of $ 5 million.
The miner was arrested in Nekokli, one of the main strongholds of the Clan del Golfo, near the border with Panama.
Otoniel, 50, led a Clan del Golfo formed by former members of far-right paramilitary groups fighting left-wing guerrillas until the 2010s.
The gang is present in almost 300 municipalities across the country, according to the independent Indepaz institute.
