Colombia: Two young men were found dead inside the landing gear of an aircraft

Two young men, believed to be from the Dominican Republic, were found dead inside the landing gear of an Avianca plane during maintenance at Bogota airport, the company and Colombian prosecutors said.

The aircraft was flying from Santiago, Chile. When it landed at Bogota’s El Dorado airport late Friday night, airline employees found the two stowaways dead.

Avianca expressed its condolences to the families of the two young people, adding that while it inspects its aircraft before each flight, airport security is the responsibility of local authorities.

The victims were 15-20 years old. No passports or identity cards were found on them, but one of them had coins from the Dominican Republic and in a suitcase they had documents from that country. This fact suggests that they may have been on the plane since January 3, since that is when the particular plane last traveled to the Dominican Republic.

The aircraft underwent routine maintenance on 27 December and subsequently flew to Bogotá, Guarulhos (near Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Santiago.

The two bodies were frozen and one of them had burns.
