Colombia, US to oppose attempts to destabilize ‘foreign’ elections with Russia in mind

The governments of the United States and Colombia will join forces to oppose “foreign agents” who will try to destabilize the spring elections in the Andean country, they announced yesterday.

Colombian President Ivan Duque and US Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland met in the Bogota presidency to discuss regional security, democracy and the economy.

“Our desire is for free and fair elections, Colombian elections for Colombians, and we must protect them from outside agents who want to manipulate them, as they have tried to do in other parts of the world,” Nuland said. in the press.

He described the cyber-attacks as “threats”, “misinformation” and the spread of “fake news”, referring to attacks that are not of “Colombian origin”.

Although she did not mention Russia by name, her statement came four days after allegations made by the Colombian government that Moscow “interfered” on its border with Venezuela – which were rejected by the Russian ambassador to Bogota.

Russia’s ambassador to Russia, Nikolai Tavdumadze, met Monday with Colombian Foreign Minister Marta Lucia Ramirez and vowed that Russian military aid to Venezuela would not fall into the hands of militant groups operating in the two countries.

On Tuesday, President Duke insisted that “there are external influences that seek to manipulate information and influence behavior in one direction or another.”
