Coffee production in Colombia, the world’s biggest supplier of washed arabica, fell 12% in 2022 to 11.08 million 60-kilogram bags, the lowest since 2013 and its third consecutive annual decline due to persistent rains, the National Federation said. of Coffee Growers in the country this Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Colombian coffee exports totaled 11.4 million bags last year, 8% down from 12.4 million bags in 2021.
In 2021, Colombian coffee production closed at 12.5 million bags.
The 2022 crop was below the entity’s projection of 12 million bags. The country has not recorded such a low harvest since 2013, when it reached 10.88 million bags.
“This number is the result of excessive rainfall due to a prolonged La Niña phenomenon over the past two and a half years,” the federation said in a statement.
The South American country of 50 million inhabitants faced a rainy season due to the La Niña phenomenon that delayed the flowering and production of coffee plantations.
In December, Colombian coffee production reached 981 thousand bags, 29% less than in the same month of 2021, when it reached 1.38 million bags.
In the last month of last year, Colombian coffee exports fell 12% to 1.03 million bags from 1.16 million bags in December 2021.
Colombia, known for its smooth, high-quality coffees, has the capacity to produce around 14 million bags annually.
Between 2009 and 2012, the South American country – the third largest coffee producer in the world, after Brazil and Vietnam – missed the production target due to heavy rains and a drop in the harvest due to a program to renew coffee plantations.
The South American country has 840,000 hectares cultivated with coffee plantations and around 500,000 families depend on this activity.
