A group of Colombian soldiers will travel to Europe to train their Ukrainian counterparts in demining techniques, the South American defense minister said on Monday.
Colombia’s nearly 60-year-old internal conflict between the armed forces, left-wing rebels, right-wing paramilitaries and drug cartels has made it one of the most landmine-laden countries in the world, according to the United Nations. Mines have killed 2,342 people in Colombia and injured nearly 10,000 since 1990, according to the government.
Russian troops and Ukrainian authorities have both said they would clear mines from various locations in Ukraine amid a continuing Russian-led invasion in February.
The experts from Colombia, which is a NATO ally, were invited by the United States to train the Ukrainians, said Colombian Defense Minister Diego Molano in a statement.
“This training will be given by 11 military engineers who will go to a NATO member country that is adjacent to Ukraine,” Molano said.
