Colonel who had 111 weapons and ammunition in apartment is hospitalized

Retired Brazilian Army Colonel Virgílio Parra Dias, who stored 111 weapons and ammunition in the apartment that was set on fire in Campinas, on Saturday night (24), was admitted to the Doutor Mário Gatti Municipal Hospital this Tuesday (27). The Colonel fled after the fire and was missing until then.

According to information from the 1st DP of Campinas, Virgílio was at the house of another retired colonel from the Brazilian Army, Trajano Gonçalves dos Santos Diniz Junior. The house was on Rua Elisário Pires Camargo, in the Jardim Chapadão neighborhood, about 2km from the burned apartment.

Trajano called the Fire Department when he saw Virgílio unconscious, with a wound on his neck due to a suicide attempt. The colonel was taken to the emergency room at Hospital Mário Gatti, where he remains hospitalized, as confirmed to the CNN by the hospital.

A fire broke out in a residential building in Campinas at around 6:41 pm this Saturday (24), when firefighters were called. According to the Civil Police, the apartment belongs to retired Brazilian Army Colonel, Virgílio Parra Dias. There were weapons and ammunition at the scene, which may have been the cause of an explosion in the apartment, which caused an even stronger fire.

In total, 44 people had to evacuate the building, 11 of which were rescued by rappelling. In total, 37 were rescued, none in serious condition, and taken to the Casa de Saúde Hospital and Emergency Care Unit in São José.

According to the São Paulo Civil Defense, the explosion hit the apartment on the first floor of the building on Rua Hércules Florence, in the Botafogo neighborhood, in the city of Campinas. Another four apartments were hit by the impact, the elevator was damaged and the electricity supply was interrupted. In total, the building has seven floors.
