Colorful has announced the release of the SL500 Mini solid state drive. This drive is designed for the same connectivity as a regular 2.5-inch drive, but the new Colorful is noticeably shorter.
The dimensions of the SL500 Mini are 26 x 68 x 7 mm, which is about a quarter of the usual 2.5-inch drive. The SL500 Mini SSD weighs only 2g.
The drive is made using SDP (SATA Disk in Package) technology, in which the controller and flash memory crystals are packed in one case. The finished module is mounted on a board with standard SATA connectors.
The advantages of SDP include lower power consumption and increased resistance to external influences, including high temperatures, humidity and vibration. This allows the manufacturer to recommend the SL500 Mini SSD for industrial applications.
The SL500 Mini SSDs are expected to ship this quarter. The 250 GB model costs $ 40, the 500 GB model costs $ 60.
