No negotiations can be held with Russia at this time, 4.5 months after the Russian armed forces invaded its territory Ukrainianas German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock believes.
“What can you negotiate with someone who is not even willing to agree with the International Committee of the Red Cross to let the civilians go?” he told the German magazine Stern and broadcasts APE-MPE.
The head of German diplomacy rejected the call, made in a recent open letter signed by several figures in her country, for an immediate ceasefire to be declared and peace negotiations to begin.
“If I were Ukrainian, I would find this letter naive, annoying and arrogant. Where did the German foreign minister get the right to decide on behalf of Ukraine which part of the country should be ceded, how many million of its citizens should be subject to Russian occupation? he continued.
“Disputing his role”
Burbok also said she had to speak personally with her Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, after the war broke out on February 24. He said he wished he could say “come on Sergei, let’s talk peace”, but questioned how much power the seasoned Russian diplomat has today. “What role the Russian foreign minister plays in all this is questionable,” he ruled.
The two foreign ministers attended the G20 summit in Bali last week. But Mr. Lavrov left immediately after his speech, not waiting to hear what Ms. Burbok or anyone else had to object.
