“Comet of the Century” appears in wedding photo shoot

A couple had nothing less than the unusual presence of “Comet of the Century ” while carrying out a pre-wedding photoshoot in Icapuí, a coastal city in Ceará. João Melo, who has been working in the wedding business for over 15 years, is the photographer responsible for the remarkable recording that took place in the early hours of this Tuesday (1st).

In the image, the bride and groom, Tamires and Gabriel, dressed in white, are at the top of a hill and in the background when the bright comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) passes in the background and takes part in the recording. According to João Melo, the unusual “guest” was already awaited. Everything was already planned by the professional who had been monitoring the star for a long time and knew about his location, which led to the couple choosing the city of Icapuí to carry out the shoot.

On that occasion, the photographer and the couple then traveled to the interior of Ceará on Friday (27). In the early hours of Tuesday (1st), around 3:15 am, the trio walked for more than half an hour until they found the perfect place to take photographs and better capture the comet’s passage. Finally, the chosen location was a hill with the starry sky in the background as a landscape.

“It’s a very rare event, right? A comet passing very close to Earth with such visibility. I tried to align both things: astronomy with wedding photography. I then suggested to the couple that they buy some lamps to give a cool effect and they really accepted the request.”, shared the photographer to CNN .

This would not be the first time that João has photographed amidst scenarios of this nature. According to him, it is extremely difficult to do as it is necessary to have perfect conditions for the photo. Being far from large centers to avoid light and air pollution is one of the main requirements for perfect registration to occur. The effect is called “astrophotography”, a branch that consists of photographing the night sky to reveal the presence of celestial bodies.

As a professional photographer since 2009, João enjoys the practice involving astronomical objectives and the teachings about astronomy learned when he was a child with his father, an enthusiast in the field. From the knowledge acquired with him, João also passed on the teachings to his son today.

“My father always had telescopes, so he explained to me about the stars and constellations. Today I also have a telescope and I teach my son everything.”, says João.

Regarding the experience with the couple, the professional argues that it was the realization of a personal and professional dream together:

“When I looked in the camera viewfinder and saw the comet approaching and the perfect bride and groom there, I was really flattered, really happy to have managed to achieve this result together with the bride and groom’s efforts. It’s really spectacular to see that little spot looking like a little star with a tail. I got goose bumps, excited watching it and very happy. For me it was a personal and professional achievement”, described the photographer about the experience.

“Comet of the Century”

According to the National Observatory, Since September 22nd, Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), acclaimed as the potential “comet of the century”, began to be seen in different parts of the country during dawn.

Discovered in January 2023 by the Chinese Tsuchinshan Observatory, the celestial body has been increasingly brighter, making it easier to observe with the naked eye. Due to its passage through the southern hemisphere, the phenomenon could become one of the most striking astronomical events of 2024.

The astronomical object is expected to approach the Sun between October 7th and 11th. After that, it can be seen at the end of the evening. Already its closest approach to Earth should take place on October 12th, at a distance of 70,684,993 kilometers.
