Coming from Zelensky to the US “makes no sense,” says White House official

An White House employee raised questions on Wednesday (26) about an invitation to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, to meet US President Donald Trump, would make sense, given the Ukrainian statement that the agreement of minerals between the two countries is not completed.

“If the Ukrainian leader says the deal is not finalized, I don’t see why an invitation would make sense,” the official commented to Reuters. “There is an expectation that your coming will be to recognize a final position (about the mineral agreement) and it is not in a final position in your own words in this new wording.”

Zelensky refused to sign an earlier draft of a mineral agreement while Washington sought rights to $ 500 billion in natural richness in Ukraine.

Kiev protested that he had received much less than in US help and that the deal did not have the security guarantees that Ukraine needs.

Rare land minerals

Ukraine launched the idea of opening its critical minerals for allied investments in the past fall by presenting a “victory plan” that sought to put it in the strongest position for negotiations and force Moscow to sit at the table.

Zelensky stated that less than 20% of Ukraine’s mineral resources, including about half of rare land deposits, were under Russian occupation.

Rare lands are important in the manufacture of high performance magnets, electric motors and consumer electronics. Zelensky also said Moscow could open these resources to his North Korea Allies and Iran, both enemies from the US.

Russian troops have been earning ground in the east for months, investing resources in the offensive, while the much smaller army of Kiev fights the scarcity of soldiers and cares about future supplies of abroad weapons.

Zelensky said Ukraine had the largest titanium reserves in Europe, essential for the aviation and space industry, and uranium, used for nuclear power and weapons.

Many of the titanium deposits were mapped in the northwest of Ukraine, away from the fighting.

Ukraine quickly readjusted the foreign policy approach to align with the transactional worldview defined by the new White House occupant, Ukraine’s most important ally.

But Zelensky emphasized that Kiev was not proposing to “donate” his resources, and offered a mutually beneficial partnership to develop them together.
