The Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) reported this Monday (1st) that it removed 969 tons of trash from the streets and waterfronts of Rio de Janeiro after New Year's Eve in the city.
According to Comlurb, 484 tons of waste were removed in Copacabana alone, an increase of around 9% compared to last year's New Year's Eve.
The mega cleaning operation involved 4,778 street cleaners, the largest number in history for the party. During the work, 215 vehicles were used, including 71 compactors, 81 tippers, 30 minibuses to transport professionals, in addition to 23 beach tractors with rear implements for sifting the sand.
“This year, with the use of new beach cleaning equipment and new shovels and mini mechanical shovels, Comlurb managed to break the record, finishing the job before 10am. Cleaning the beach sand took a little longer because people are lying down, which makes it difficult for our equipment to move around. But the work in general exceeded expectations, everyone is to be congratulated”, commented Flávio Lopes, president of Comlurb.
After Copacabana, the place with the highest volume of garbage collected was Barra da Tijuca and Recreio dos Bandeirantes, with 195.28 tons. An increase of almost 3% compared to the same period last year.
