Commerce in São Paulo generates almost 5 thousand jobs in May, says FecomercioSP

In May, commerce generated almost 5 thousand jobs in the capital of São Paulo alone, according to the Employment Survey in the State of São Paulo (PESP), carried out by the Federation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP).

Retail alone created 3,196 jobs in the period, driven by the clothing and accessories segment, with 447 jobs. In the year, there were 4,048 employment relationships, influenced by wholesale, with 4,726 jobs.

Altogether, São Paulo’s commerce closed the five-month period of the year, from January to May, with a positive balance, between layoffs and hiring, of 849 thousand open positions.

The service sector was responsible for generating 15,384 jobs in the city of São Paulo in the fifth month of the year. Among the segments, the best result was observed in the accommodation and food group, with 3,836, led by restaurants and bars, with 3,119 hires.

The second largest balance came from the professional, technical and scientific services group, which opened 2,905 jobs, mainly influenced by advertising services, with 1,381 openings.

During the year, 66,731 jobs were created, of which 16,046 were registered in the education division.

In May, commerce in São Paulo gathered 15,801 new registrations in work permits. This represented a 52% growth in hiring of workers compared to April. The data are from the Employment Survey in the State of São Paulo carried out by FecomercioSP.

The jump in the level of employment in the sector in May had a significant share of retail, which was responsible for the generation of 10,198 jobs. Following, according to FecomercioSP, came wholesale, with 3,916 jobs, and trade and repair of vehicles, with 1,687 hires.

Among the 35 segments that make up the retail trade, the clothing and accessories and supermarkets sectors were the ones that generated the most jobs in the period. In order, 1,332 and 1,427 jobs were created.

These activities, according to FecomercioSP, recovered part of the vacancies lost in the first quarter, due to the dismissal of employees hired for the special dates of the end of the year.

Mother’s Day and the drop in temperatures, in the case of clothing, contributed to the advances observed in the segments, according to technicians and economists at FecomercioSP. In the year, commerce generated 4,645 jobs.

In the service sector, job creation also accelerated in May, growing 44.3% in relation to the previous month. 40,504 jobs were created across the state. All segments presented positive balances.

But the highlights were the accommodation and food sector, with 8,343 vacancies, pulled by the services of bars and restaurants, with 6,114, and administrative and complementary activities, with the hiring of 6,032 workers.

This result was mainly influenced by services for buildings and landscaping activities, which hired 2,141 people.

In addition to these, transport, storage and mail services hired 6,005 workers, with emphasis on road freight, which opened 4,366 vacancies. Compared to May 2021, jobs in the service sector grew by 18.1%. From January to May, 191,000 CLT jobs were created in the state.
