Commission: Close cooperation with the Greek authorities in the reports on repatriation of migrants

There is continuity in terms of the Commission’s work with the Greek authorities on reports of migrant push-backs and there is a new legislative proposal in this regard to ensure that there is a robust monitoring system built in which also entails monitoring of fundamental rights in the Greek asylum system , said the responsible representative of the Commission, Anita Hipper, when asked during the regular briefing of correspondents about a Spiegel article on the subject.

Ms. Hipper noted that the Greek authorities are monitoring the cases and the Commission is in constant contact with them to make sure this is happening. “We work very closely together,” the spokeswoman emphasized, adding that there is a part that concerns the national administration and judicial authorities that have the direct responsibility to ensure the protection of fundamental rights.

Additionally, Anita Hipper added that Frontex fulfills an important task in supporting Member States in managing the EU’s external borders and this must be done in full respect of fundamental rights.
