Commission: Denies report on ‘technocratic government in Athens’

The Commission’s Chief Representative, Eric Mammer, categorically denied the allegations when asked about an Euractiv article, which states that “Commission circles are pushing for a technocratic government in Athens”.

Mr Mammer called it a “ridiculous and completely unfounded post”. In particular, as he noted, “the Commission will not fall so low by commenting on such a ridiculous and unfounded post.”

The Euractiv publication stated that after the experience of the negotiations for the first reform milestones for the first tranche of the Recovery Fund, there are strong discussions and thoughts for the promotion of the Italian model Draghi, and for Greece.

Based on the reasoning of these circles, always according to the same publication, the existing staff of the Greek political system “is not able to carry out the deep cuts required in order for the country to change page”.

He also claimed that circles in Europe fear that the current government is “a victim of strong pressure and commitments on a closed group of Greek businessmen”.

“This is a vicious circle that does not allow the economy to open up to European and foreign investment.”

“There are ready-made scenarios in response to a possible political crisis that will be triggered if the disbursement of the next tranche of the Recovery Fund is blocked,” a source close to the issue told Euractiv.

“This scenario reinforces the system of the next elections with a very simple, with a very strong scenario of non-government at the” most critical point of the Recovery Fund reforms “, the same source commented, while the publication continued:

“The disbursement of the first tranche of the Fund has already been delayed. Athens intended to apply for the tranche last October, which never happened because the Commission made it clear that it would reject it due to the delay in reforms.” “The drawers of the Secretaries-General of the ministries for months despite the central government’s baseline for strong political will to push for reforms,” the source said.

Finally, the article said that the messages the EU receives from Athens are that the elections will take place in September.
