THE European Commission announced today that the Executive Vice President, Frans Timmermansresponsible for the European Green Deal, has submitted his resignation, as he will be a candidate for the Prime Ministership of the Netherlands, in the early parliamentary elections to be held in November.
“Today, following his decision to stand as a candidate in the upcoming election campaign in the Netherlands, Executive Vice President Frans Timmermans submitted his resignation as a member of the European Commission. The President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, accepted his resignation, with immediate effectexpressing at the same time its gratitude to Vice-President Timmermans, for his many years of successful work for the Commission and the European citizens”, the Commission’s announcement states.
The President of the Commission decided to delegate the role of Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal to the Vice-President, Maros Sefkovic. It also decided to entrust M. Sefcovic, temporarily with portfolio responsibility for Climate Action Policy, pending the appointment of a new Commissioner of Dutch nationality.

Thanks to his outstanding contribution and strong personal commitment, we have made great strides towards achieving the EU’s goals of becoming the first climate-neutral continent and raising levels of climate ambition worldwide. F. Timmermans’ contribution to the work of the Commission and the European project goes beyond the European Green Deal. He contributed to the formation of many of the Commission’s initiatives, with camaraderie.”
President von der Leyen informed the President of the European Parliament and the Spanish Presidency of the Council about the arrangements made after the resignation of F. Timmermans, in order to facilitate the smooth continuation of all ongoing procedures. In an official letter to the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, the President of the Commission requests that the name of the candidate for the new Commissioner for Dutch nationality be proposed.
It is recalled that F. Timmermans served the European Commission during the legislative period 2014-2019, as the first Vice-President responsible for the improvement of legislation, inter-institutional relations, the rule of law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
In 2019 at Ursula von der Leyen’s Commission, F. Timmermans took up the position of Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal, coordinating the European Commission’s ambitious legislative agenda to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050 and representing the EU in international negotiations on climate change. He also coordinated the Commission’s work on the EU strategy for biodiversity, for a zero-pollution future and for the circular economy.
It is noted that F. Timmermans, 62 years old, will be the head of the joint ballot of the Social Democratic Party of the Netherlands (PvdA) and the Greens (GroenLinks) for the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands and a candidate for the prime ministership of the country.
