Commission: Hardens stance on enlargement draft – Turkey to refrain from unilateral actions

THE Commission in her new draft for the enlargement decided to harden her stance and warned her Turkeythat it should refrain from unilateral actions.

According to ERT, the draft states that “sovereignty and sovereign rights in airspace and maritime zones of all neighboring coastal states, including (the sea zones) entitled to their islands, they must be respected and the demarcation of exclusive economic zones and of the continental shelf should addressed in accordance with international law through dialogue in good faith and seeking good neighborly relations”.

At the same time, he notes that “continuing the dialogue in good faith and refraining from unilateral actions that go against the interests of the EU and violate international law and the sovereign rights of EU member states constitutes an absolute requirement to ensure a stable and secure environment in the eastern Mediterranean and the development of a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship between the EU and Turkey.”
