The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, detailed this Wednesday (7) some proposals by the European Union to deal with the situation in the energy sector in the region, pressured by the cut in the shipment of natural gas from the Russia via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.
via twitter, von der Leyen stated that the bloc’s executive arm wants to limit the revenues of companies that produce electricity at low costs.
According to the authority, these companies register “unexpected income”, in the current context of strong price increases. “It is time for consumers to benefit from low costs,” he said, saying that the European Commission will propose that these windfall profits be “redirected” to support companies and people in vulnerable situations.
Von der Leyen also said that there needs to be a strategy to reduce spikes in the use of energy , containing costs. She said that a mandatory target for cutting electricity use at peak consumption hours will be proposed.
The president of the European Commission also said that fossil fuel companies record “massive profits”. According to her, the EU will propose a “solidarity contribution” to Petroleum and gas . Energy utilities, on the other hand, should receive liquidity support to deal with the high volatility in prices.
She even criticized in her messages the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin , accusing him of manipulating the energy sector. According to her, the European Union intends to pass measures to protect the most vulnerable, maintaining political unity, while reducing Russia’s income by buying less gas from the country.
