“As a former member of the Council of Europe, Turkey urgently needs to make steady and lasting progress in respect of fundamental rights,” emphasizes the European Commission’s representative, Nabila Masraly, following the announcement of the European Court of Human Rights on the Kavala case.
In particular, Ms. Masrali states that the European Court of Human Rights “confirmed that Turkey has failed to fulfill its obligations under Article 46 § 1 of the Convention to comply with the Chamber decision issued by the Court in the case of Kavala v. Turkey on December 10 2019”.
It adds that it “confirmed that the detention of Mr. Kavala was politically motivated and an attempt to silence him and deter other human rights defenders. His recent unjust conviction is inconsistent with respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.”
In addition, Nabila Masrali underlines that “Turkey’s continued refusal to implement these decisions increases the EU’s concerns about the compliance of Turkish justice with international and European standards”.
“The EU urges Turkey to follow up on the recommendations of the Council of Europe on strengthening the rule of law, democracy and fundamental rights and to implement the pending decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, in particular the one calling for the immediate release of Mr. . Kavala” concludes the representative of the Commission.
